In the American South, cloves are known for their ability to compel and command. And if you take a whole clove out of the jar in your spice rack, you'll see why it probably got that reputation. Aside from its warm, woody scent, it looks like a serious piece of weaponry.
And while you can certainly get your way by swinging a club around, it's not really the most elegant way of advancing your will.
